The Politics of Experience  /  R.D. Laing

In this timely book, which has had over 16 printings, a young Briritish psychiatrist attacks the Establishment assumptions about "normality" with a radical and challenging view of the mental sickness built into our society.

"Even in psychoanalysis there is an abiding tendency to suppose
that the schizophrenic's experiences are somehow unreal or invalid . . .
. . . I think, however, that schizophrenics have more to teach psychiatrists
about the inner world than psychiatrists their patients.

"It seems that without exception the behavior that gets labeled schizophrenic is a
special strategy that a person invents in order to live in an unlivable situation. . .

"The social system, not single individuals extrapolated from it must be the object of study.
We know that the biochemistry of the person is highly sensitive to social circumstance.
That a checkmate situation occasions a biochemical response which in turn facilitates
or inhibits certain types of experience and behavior is plausible
a priori.

"
The behavior of the diagnosed patient is part of a much larger network of disturbed behavior.

"If all through school the young were provoked to question The Ten Commandments,
the sanctity of revealed religion, the foundatons of patriotism, the profit motive,
the two-party system,  monogamy, etc., there would be
such creativity that society would not know where to turn."

The Formula by Thomas M. Shepherd

Note: This diet is rich in isoflavones, natural antioxidants and known protectors against both prostate cancer and breast cancer. Isoflavones are derived from the soy bean and soy bean products, such as tofu and miso.  The soy bean is the only plant known to be a complete protein. That means it contains all eight of the essential amino acids your body can't produce on its own. Fresh green leafy vegetables are the best source of essential vitamins and minerals, especially folic acid, essential to optimum neurological functioning. Cruciferous vegetables (Brussels sprouts, broccoli and cauliflower ) are an excellent source of fiber, and protect against colon cancer. They also speed up the removal of excessive estrogen from the body.  Cold water fin fish (albacore tuna, sardines, salmon) are high in niacin and omega-3 fatty acids, another antioxident and a known anti-inflammatory agent, which is proven to reduce both blood pressure and LDL cholesterol, yet raise HDL (good) cholesterol, factors that not only increase overall body functioning, but stimulate optimum brain functioning. Oysters contain high levels of zinc, essential for testosterone production and resultant clear thinking. Garlic, a natural antibiotic, also regulates blood pressure.

Breakfast

Glass of 100% Orange Juice

Oatmeal & Soy Milk

Tofu Omelet
Pour one tablespoonful of olive oil or canola oil in bottom of circular pyrex bowl. Add 1/4 cup of eggbeater (eggwhites with lecithin). Add 1/2 cup of chopped tofu, diced onion or crushed garlic, paprika, imitation bacon bits, parsley flakes, and salt and pepper. Cover. Place on rotating turntable in microwave. Set at high and microwave for 2.5 to 4.0 minutes. Remove from oven and gently loosen edges, then allow omelet to slide onto plate. Place between two slices of whole wheat bread for sandwich. Makes a generous serving for one.

Beverages

100% grape juice, 100% orange juice, any other 100% fruit juice,
soy milk, water, green tea, chamomile tea, hot chocolate

Avoid:
all alcoholic beverages,  tobacco products, recreational and psychotropic drugs, which raise estrogen levels, reduce testosterone levels and lower the brain's capacity for critical thinking; excessive caffeine increases nervousness and can impair critical thinking ability.  Gauge yourself. Note: alcohol, tobacco and neuroleptic drugs tend to deplete zinc, which is a necessary element for maintaining normal testosterone levels, emotional stability and  a good memory.

Red Grapes, NOT Red Wine
The wine industry has been disseminating "scientific" propaganda, suggesting that a little red wine can thin your blood, retarding clots. Bear in mind that the alcohol in red wine can also reduce your brain's capacity for critical thinking. It is the unfermented red grape, not the alcoholic beverage, that thins your blood, retarding clots. Red grapes are a rich storehouse of antioxidant, anticancer compounds. Red grapes are also high in quercetin, a mildly sedating antioxidant. Grape skins contain resveratrol, shown to inhibit blood-platelet clumping (and consequently blood clot formation and to boost good-type HDL cholesterol. Red grapes are antibacterial and antiviral in test tubes. Stick to the red grapes! Leave the fermented grapes, the wine, to those morons who have delusions of  being "intelligent" and "sophisticated." Red wine vinegar, used as a condiment, is a health-aid, as it kills bacteria on leafy greens.

Supplements

A daily multivitamin supplement, augmented with vitamin C tablets and a time-release B complex supplement containing niacin and folic acid will help to stabilize the nervous system. A 15-30 mg. zinc supplement daily should help to regulate adequate testosterone levels and enhance memory. Psychoactive drugs (including alcohol and tobacco) significantly deplete zinc levels.

Music

Classical music relaxes the mind and stimulates creative thought. It is one of the best food supplements there is: Mozart, Beethoven, Chopin, Rachmaninof, Pachobel, etc
.

Exercise

Walking, light jogging, aerobic boxing, bicycling, surfing, skateboarding,
outdoor or indoor return baseball (with a bungee net), or tennis lobbing by hitting a tennis ball attached to an elastic chord, which is grounded, are all forms of exercise that do not require a partner. In addition, these excercises release endorphins (mind relaxants), stimulate the brain's creative powers and enhance critical thinking abilit
y.

A 36" X48" baseball bungee return-net can be used indoors or outdoors, and can be purchased for around $20.00.

A tennis ball attached to an elastic string, which is grounded to a small weight, can be purchased for around $10 at most any sporting goods store.
