Purpose

Hon. Dr. Thomas M. Shepherd, founder of the Tom Shepherd World Educational Foundation, brings to you free home-schooling, utilizing the Montessori philosophy of education.

The Montessori Method, based on giving children and adults the freedom to create, not destroy, was developed by
Maria Montessori, an Italian physician and educator (1870-1952), who established Montessori schools throughout the world. To read more about the Montessori Method, click here.

According to Cambridge educator Alfie Kohn, author of
No Contest: The Case Against Competititon, a coopertive atmosphere, rather than a competitive atmosphere, makes people happier, more secure, and more productive. Competition in the classroom stifles creativity. Alfie Kohn is also the author of What Does It Mean To Be Well Educated?   Alfie Kohn Homepage

The Shepherd-Montessori Institute employs the educational philosophy of Maria Montessori, Alfie Kohn, Lajos Egri and others.
The Teaching Company offers college level lectures on audio and video. View catalog on-line.

Dover Publications publishes books on The Montessori Method, art, architecture, crafts, history, humanities, language, literature,  mathematics, music, mythology, philosophy, psychology, religion, science  and other subjects.

Dr. Temple Grandi
n is a noted autistic professor at Colorado State University. She is also the author of many books. Her publications include Developing Talents: Careers for Individuals With Asperger's Syndrome.

BOOKS

Frank Lloyd Wright
1869 - 1959

Frank Lloyd Wright, one of America's foremost architects, did not have
a degree in architecture. In fact he did not graduate from college

Every great architect is - necessarily - a great poet.

"Imagination is more important than knowledge."
Albert Einstein

.

Albert Einstein
1879 - 1955

Einstein, world renowned physicist, was a lonely and "dreamy" child, who had difficulty making friends and appeared to be autistic. He preferred playing alone with blocks or making houses of cards. He would softly repeat every sentence he uttered, and was not considered fluent in speech even at age nine.

Never given an IQ test, it was Einstein's  opinion that most people don't bother to use the intelligence they possess, that they are persuaded to let others do their thinking for them.

Bruce Goff
architect ~ artist ~  composer ~ educator

Born in Alton, Kansas in 1904, Bruce Alonzo Goff showed remarkable creative talent at an early age. Largely self-educated, yet encouraged by his father and his father's colleagues, he went to work at an early age with leading established architects in Tulsa, ultimately being appointed a professor of architecture at University of Oklahoma, although he lacked the usual academic credentials.
As an educator, he placed  a high value on unconventional methods
for stimulating creativity in his students. He employed a
free association
technique in creating his designs.

Lajos Egri
(1888 - 1967)

Born in Hungary, Egri founded the Egri School of Writing in New York City in the 1930s. He spent his life writing and directing plays in the United States and Europe, as well as writing screenplays for the film industry.

From the lectures of writer-educator Lajos Egri:

Without exception everyone was born with creative ability. It is essential that people be given the opportunity to express themselves. If Balzac, De Maupassant, O. Henry, hadn't learned to write fiction, they might have become inveterate liars,
instead of great writers.

If we can't create something useful or beautiful
. . . we shall certainly create something else: trouble, for instance.

Only by aiming for perfection in art can you succeed,
even if you never reach your goal.

You may claim that a real genius always finds a way to succeed, but that is not so. Every individual who has succeeded, despite adversity, has been given
the chance to do so.

Noone is born to be great. We love one certain subject more than any other.
Given all we need to further our knowledge, we are likely to make great strides. Forced to do something else, we become disgruntled, discouraged,
and end in failure.

Sweden First to Ban
Corporal Punishment

In 1979 Swedish Parliament voted to prohibit the
"right" of parents to chastise their children. Other Nordic nations,
including Norway, Finland, Iceland and Greenland enacted similar legislation.
The result? Less crime.

"In a free democracy we use words to educate, not blows, not violence.
We talk to people in a civilized manner. We do not humiliate them, beat,
them or imprison them. If we can't convince our children with words
we will NEVER convince them with violence."
