Betty Nolan Wilson

Artist & Illustrator

Betty (Elizabeth) Nolan Wilson was the illustrator for Tales About Joplin: Short and Tall, a collection of stories authored by Evelyn Milligan Jones and published by Dorothea Hoover in 1962 and 1968. Betty was educated at Joplin High School, Drury College in Springfield, and the Famous Artists School in Westport, Conn.

Her parents were John Dolan, a lawyer, and Elizabeth Hale Dolan, manager of Richards, a dress shop owned by Mark Ettinger. Her husband, Ralph Lauder Nolan, was president of Connor Investment Co. and general manager of
Joplin Municipal Airport. He was a great  nephew of early-day industrialist bachelor Tom O'Connor.

Following Ralph's death in 1971, Betty married Alan S. Wilson Jr., who died in 1987. Betty was survived by two sons, John Keith Nolan, Lakeville, Conn. and Thomas Connor Nolan II of the home; and several grandchildren and great grandchildren.

NOTE: Thomas Connor Nolan II received a 6-month prison sentence in 1967 for embezzlement of funds from the family-owned Security Natonal Bank & Trust Co. of Joplin. He later served time in a Texas prison for forgery -- for forging the initials of another bank officer on a check he sought to clear for cashing at a Fort Worth bank.
