Mabel Darlington Mitchell Snyder
  
Born 1880 in Wellsville, New York
   Early childhood spent in Salem, West Virginia
   Adolescence and early adult years at Piqua, Ohio.  
   Wife, mother, homemaker at Galena, Kansas and at
   Joplin, Missouri from 1909 until her death in 1962.

Mabel Darlington Mitchell Snyder was born in Wellsville, New York, August 28, 1880. She was the daughter of Thomas Darlington Mitchell and Clara Swift Mitchell.

She was the granddaughter of James D. Swift and Rachael Ormerod Swift, who migrated from Canada to Wellsville, N.Y., then to Caudersport, Pennsylvania.

James D. Swift was one of twelve children sired by
James Hatch Swift and Esther Utter, originally from New York State, who migrated to Canada. Some, including James D. Swift and his wife, returned to New York State. The Utter clan were early settlers of Rhode Island.

Mabel briefly attended Salem College (from the age of 12) while her parents were residing in Salem, West Virgnia.

She married
John Abbott Benham Snyder in a Methodist-Episcopal Ring ceremony at the Mitchell home in Piqua, in 1905. news item

Prior to her marriage to Mr. Snyder, she taught piano and worked as at the Snyder family's Piqua Savings & Loan Bank.


Mabel was a member of the Century Club, the Ridpath Club, the Joplin Woman's Club, and the Presbyterian Church. She also worked as a volunteer for the Red Cross.

Her husband,
John Abbott Benham Snyder, was born in Ashtabula, Ohio and reared in Muncie, Indiana and Piqua. He became general manager of the Galena Harrow Factory at Galena, Kansas in 1909, and he founded the Snyder Bus Company, an inter-urban bus line serving Southwest Missouri and Norwest Arkansas in 1914, which was purchased by he Crown Coach Company at his death in 1931.

Mabel died at St. John's Hospital in 1962 at the age of 82.

Survivors included her daughter Clara Olive Snyder Shepherd; her dear physician and housekeeper, Veroa Goodwin; her sister, Helen Mitchell, Monterey, Caifornia, whom she reared from the age of twelve following the death of their own parents; and two grandsons whom she reared, John Snyder Blaise Shepherd and Thomas Mitchell Shepherd. Her brother, Harry Mitchell, preceded her in death. Her sister, Helen, died in 1975. Her daughter, Clara Olive, died in 1976.

Honorary pallbearers included Cowgill Blair, Clarence Craig and Ralph Nolan. Burial was at Mount Hope Cemetery.
