The Roots of Joplin's Musical, Theatrical and Architectural Culture
Mrs. Jay L. Wilder Presents was the creation of Fern Wilder, who brought opera to Joplin during World War II, including The Red Mill and other greats. The Joplin Symphony Orchestra, one of the finest orchestras in the Middle West, is Joplin's own contribution. The Community Concert Series was created back in the 1950s through the combined efforts of LaDonna Sanders, Clara Olive Snyder Shepherd, Helen Newman and others, bringing some of the world's finest musicians to the area for memorable performances. Clara Olive and others were schooled in the violin by virtuoso Rhetia Hesselberg. The Jopin Little Theater, spawned during the 1920s has spawned many fine theatrical performances from fine actors in the 4-State area.. C. Bates Manning and Truman Martini.were two leading architects. Albert Newman was a leading interior designer. He was the father of John and Elsa Newman. Clara Olive Shepherd was a musician, writer, producer and director. Her shows were produced throughout America during the 1940s. Dr. Elizabeth Kemm and other Joplin natives have performed and taught music at Missouri Southern State University and other instiutions for many years, as have many, many others.
