Regular Exercise and Vegetarian Diet: The Key To Healthy Living

A modified vegetarian diet that includes daily servings of  garbanzo beans, tofu  (a soybean derivative),  fresh green leafy vegetables, tomatoes, avocados, carrots, celery, cruciferous vegetables (Brussels sprouts, broccoli and cauliflower), fresh citrus fruit (oranges, grapefruit), grapes, berries, olive oil (or canola oil), red or green  peppers,  onions and garlic is a proven way to sane and healthy living.  Tofu is an excellent meat substitute when consumed along  with fresh vegetables and fresh fruit. Consume small portions and chew your food thoroughly before swallowing.

The occasional addition of steamed cold water fin fish (tuna, sardines, salmon, trout) and poultry breast as a "meat dish" is often recommended by nutritionists, although the tofu steak is the number one suggested vegetarian "meat dish." Fish and chicken and cow's milk are good sources of niacin.

Get in the habit of drinking water, non-fat milk (for protein and calcium) and soy milk (beneficial to the arteries) in lieu of other beverages. Fill your refrigerator water bottles with hot tap water (less impurities) in lieu of cold tap water. It is recommended to use vinegar (apple cider vinegar) as a condiment. Avoid alcoholic beverages. Limit your coffee intake. Consider chamomile tea.

NOTE: Daily exercise -- walking in lieu of driving whenever possible -- will keep your weight and blood pressure in check. Both fresh garlic and celery are known to safely lower blood pressure to healthy levels. Obtain your soy from soybeans, soy milk or tofu. For a snack, prepare hummus (a puree of garbanzo beans, olive oil, lemon juice and fresh minced garlic). Use as a dip for celery sticks.

If you follow a modified vegetarian diet, as suggested above, your blood pressure and cholesterol levels will,  within a short period of time, fall into a normal range. Your risk for cancer and heart disease will be virtually non-existent.

Your anxiety levels should  be reduced by employing regular habits of quiet
meditation while alone. Avoid crowds, cults, psychiatry, group therapy, alcoholic beverages and 12-step programs. Be your own teacher, analyst and your own spiritual advisor! Deprogram yourself from control freaks and radio and television noise -- a high source of anxiety. Be selective in your choice of companions.

Alcohol/Drugs Reduce Testosterone & Intellectual Capacity
Alcohol, hallucinogens and prescribed psychotropic drugs reduce testosterone levels, according to Eugene Shippen, M.D. and William Fryer, authors of The Testosterone Syndrome. Reduced testosterone levels in both men and women reduce virility, reduce one's ability for critical thinking and increase fat deposits and the risk for developing many forms of cancer, kidney disease, cardiovascular disease and pulmonary disease.  Be wary of media reports that suggest alcoholic beverages are a "health food."  Zinc supplements can boost testosterone.  Soy and broccoli can reduce unhealthy estrogen levels.

The Secrets of Organic Gardening:
undestanding soil chemistry, the art of composting, pH balancing and the use of organic pesticides

by Tom Blaise Shepherd

In order to grow healthy and nutritious vegetables without having to rely on pernicious pesticides, a knowledge of basic soil chemistry is helpful.
First and foremost, garden soil must contain ample amounts of humus -- decaying plant materials which serve as food for bacteria, fungi and molds. It is the fungi, which grow into the roots of plants, that pick up the minerals from the soil and feed them to plant. This association between the roots of plants and fungi is known as mycorrhiza. It is thus an essential process for the development of healthy, nutritious food-bearing plants.
The utilization of humus for plant production is the basis of organic gardening.
In order to effectively utilize humus for healthy plant production, a knowledge of composting is essential. Copmposting is the simple process of collecting organic matter, piling it up, and letting it season or rot.
Grass clippings make the best compost material as they are high in nitrogen, absorb heat quickly and break down readily for plant absorption.
Leaves also make excellent compost material, especially if they are green and chopped. Autumn leaves decompose more slowly.

Kitchen wastes, such as coffee grounds, egg shells and vegetable scraps make good composting material.
A compost pile can be easily built in your yard by staking out a 3' x  3' area above ground. Make sure the ground is reasonably level with good drainage. Till the soil 12" down under to absorb nutritients and moisture and to provide a refuge for earthworms.
Then build a 3' x  3' x  3' cage-like structure with either concrete blocks or chicken wire and 1" x 2" pieces of cedar, lelaving the top and one side open. Such a structure will provide the necessary environment for your compost to "cook."
The moisture content must be balanced. A compost that is too moist will creat foul ordors and attract flies. A plastic cover will deflect excessive moisture during rainy seasons. However, a compost that is too dry will attract ants. . . .

Automotive Routine Maintenance

by TUNE-UP JOCK - Tom Blaise de Separdi

In order for an engine to run correctly, it is necessary for an electrical spark to ignite the fuel/air mixture in the combustion chamber at exactly the right moment.
If your engine is not turning over -- that is if dies soon after starting -- if it is flooding out, then you need to employ a few routine trouble checking procedures.
      1. Are your spark plugs dirty. Remove the plugs with a simple wrench. Gently remove the carbon build-up from the tip of the plug with a clean rag and/or an air hose. If the plugs are extremely corroded, then replace them.
      2. Are your ignition wires snugly attached to the spark plugs and to the distributor cap?
      3. Are the wires worn out or corroded. If so, replace them.
      4. Are your engine's rubber air hoses all in good condition -- no breaks or leaks -- if there are breaks, tape the hose or hoses temporarily, then purchase new ones as quickly as possible..
      5. With ignition off and engine cool, remove air filter cleaner and spray entire exterior surface of carburetor thoroughly, including linkage with carburetor/choke cleaner (a methylbenzene compound). After carburetor dries, start engine and spray carburetor/choke cleaner down the carburetor throat to remove deposits from the lower throttle plate area. Is your engine's blow-by gas filter (a small piece of gauze) dirty?  -- the gas filter is inside the carburetor's air filter cleaner compartment, near the throttle. Remove it, examine it, then either rinse and dry it or replace it with a new one.
      6. If you engine floods as you attempt to start it, don't pump the accelerator peddle. Wait a while, at least an hour or so, so that the fuel mixture evaporates, then try restarting.
      7. Make sure your gasoline and oil levels are sufficient.  Make sure your radiator is full of water and coolant. If the radiator is leaking water/coolant, it may merely be a loose or broken rubber hose that needs repairing.

Remember!  You can save a lot if you do your own routine maintainance.
